5 shops for cool surf and coastal living in San Francisco
1) Mollusk Surf Shop
You don’t have to be a surfer to appreciate this spot. The space alone is very colorful and crafty. They stock a mix of surf boards, gear, books, films, prints, clothing and what I think are some of the coolest and comfiest tees out there. There’s also an art gallery within.
2) Wise Surfboards
This local institution has served the surf community since 1968. They have the largest selection of surfboards, wetsuits and gear and have a reputation for excellent service. They stock some used gear as well. You also get a good view of the beach from here.
3) General Store
Beautiful handmade crafts from West Coast designers are stocked here along with vintage frocks and Levi’s. But one of the best features of the shop is the patio out back. It features a garden and greenhouse full of cacti and succulents.
Make an appointment to see this workspace and showroom occupied by four artists and craftsman whose work embody the spirit of California living. One makes wooden surfboards, another builds furnishings from locally salvaged hardwoods, the third reinvents chairs in a cool new way, and the last is a designer and painter of words on objects and paper.
5) General Store Home
Its sister shop is located several blocks away and this newest addition features a wider collection of ceramic dinnerware, kitchenware, decorative pieces and furnishings for the home. For the ultimate relaxed California vibe, this is your destination.
