5 things to do during the World Cup in San Francisco

San Francisco will be buzzing with fans as it prepares to host six World Cup matches, including five group-stage games and one Round of 32 match. Games run from June 13 to July 1 at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, which is about an hour's drive from San Francisco. Expect big screens and scenic outdoor fan zones throughout the city. Here are some great places to soak in the fanfare energy to escape from it all.

1) Golden Gate Park

This vast park is always a hub for cultural activities, and soccer-themed festivities will surely be in the works. And while you're there, visit the art and science museums, explore the gardens, spot the buffaloes and see the old windmills. Start the journey at the conservatory and follow the paths to the beach.

2) The Presidio

Grab a picnic blanket (and even a soccer ball) and enjoy the endless green space and stunning bridge views from this national historic landmark. A good central point is the Tunnel Tops with museums, play areas, walking paths, food trucks, and a new, soon-to-debut food hall all nearby.

3) Ferry Building Marketplace

Expect big outdoor screens and a lively atmosphere along the waterfront. To experience the region's best flavors and products all in one place, pop into this old ferry terminal. Enjoy farm fresh produce, baked goods, cheese, coffee, wine and local craft beer. Farmers Market days are a great time to visit.

4) Hike Lands End, Batteries to Bluffs Trail, or walk across the Golden Gate Bridge

To get a feel for the great outdoors without venturing outside of the city, hit the coastal trails and enjoy dramatic views of the bridge and rugged cliffs. Along the way you'll pass through cypress groves, ruins, a labyrinth, old forts and artillery batteries. The visitor center is a great place to start or end your journey.

5) Explore with an eBike, GoCar o Driverless Vehicle

SF is notorious for two things: technology and hills. The solution: electric powered and driverless vehicles. Reserve one especially if you need to give your tired legs a break or to get to your World Cup viewing party quickly. Choose your app and your adventure — the options are endless and they're an energy efficient way to explore the city.
