5 more spots with history in New York
1) The Landmark Tavern
The doors on this place opened in 1868, and have remained open ever since. Patina’d wood paneling and tin ceilings really soak up the history and create a vibe. Come for the chatty bartenders and an Irish menu that delivers on the classics: beer battered fish ‘n’ chips, bangers + mash, and shepherd’s pie, along with American favorites. Especially nice is the homemade ice cream: vanilla and hazelnut cream.

2) White Horse Tavern
Though under new ownership, the legend of the White Horse lives on. The space retains its historic cred with luminaries like Dylan Thomas, Jack Kerouac and James Baldwin who drank here, but the menu has been upgraded from simple bar food to something a little nicer. Sixteen beers on draft, and thirteen cans/bottles grace the bar menu.

3) The Ear Inn
One of the oldest bars in New York. The name comes from its famous neon sign, where part of the letter B in BAR is missing to form an E. Creative types mingle with regulars and listen to live music, which happens Wednesdays and Sundays, fed by an elevated farm-to-table bar menu. Tight quarters make mingling a cinch.

4) Lexington Candy Shop
NYC’s only remnant of a bygone era when soda fountains and luncheonettes were fixtures in every neighborhood. Come here for an authentic egg cream, which despite its name, is a drink made of milk, seltzer, and chocolate or vanilla syrup. Invented in New York and at one time ubiquitous. They also excel in milkshakes, malteds, and soda-based ice cream floats. Fresh lemonade will quench your thirst in the nicest way. Diner food is also available.

5) Rudy's Bar & Grill
For those on a budget and appetite for cool dive bars, check out this neighborhood joint that has been serving New Yorkers since 1933. Free hot dogs come alongside any order. They offer 17 beers on tap plus 21 $5-$7 bottles, wine selections, and shot+beer specials. Just look for the giant pig out front.
