Just good food finds in Scotland

1) The Walnut

The Walnut on Leith Walk is what British bistro food should be – it feels like your mum’s cooking, but better. Lots better. The limited space means that you have to book a table to be guaranteed a spot. Don’t let the humble interior put you off, it does not reflect on the food. When you arrive, you are encouraged to study the daily menu that is written on a big black chalkboard, which feels like a commitment to keeping it fresh and interesting. The option to BYOB with a small corkage fee is an added bonus to the already pleasurable experience. Excellent value for money, given the quality.

2) Harbour Dunes Cafe

The clue is in the name: the Harbour Dunes Cafe has excellent views over the beach at Port Errol Cruden Bay. It’s a cute wee spot serving up classic breakfasts and eggs in the morning, and cafe classics at lunch. Their cullen skink (a classic Scottish potato and fish soup) is great. Sitting outside on a nice day is a must! It closes at 2.30 pm, but they sometimes offer a takeaway menu in the evening, which is apparently great.

3) Birsay Bay Tearoom

The cakes at Birsay Bay Tearoom are exactly what you want after a day of exploring. Georgie and her team have created something really lovely here – proper hearty, homely food with a warm welcome to match. Whether you’re coming in off a cliff walk or just passing through, this place feels like a reward. It’s relaxed, local, and everything is made with care. Definitely pop in if you’re in the area, even if just for a coffee and a look out to sea.

4) Buchanan Bistro

Next to creative space The Barn arts centre, Buchanan Bistro offers wonderfully innovative and sustainable cooking. Their allotments provide ingredients for their menu, and the pickling and smoking are done on site. Lots of great veggie, vegan and gluten-free options. The friendly knowledgeable staff will be able to keep you right. The Bistro has lovely floor-to-ceiling windows and a spacious feel, but is kept warm by their fairy lights in the evening. Definitely give it a try if you are in the Banchory area.

5) Gordon Castle Cafe

Gordon Castle Estate has a lot to offer. The walled garden has been beautifully restored to its former glory, which dates back to the 15th century. Enjoy a fresh seasonal menu dictated by their garden, with their ethos being ‘plant, pick and plate’. They make their own gin here, aptly named Gordon Castle and also have a children’s play area... Perfect!

6) Cafe Lephin

Lovely little family-run cafe on the way to Neist Point Lighthouse in Glendale. Great coffee, homebakes and fresh cafe food. They also stock a small range of art and artisan creations that are a lovely touch, especially if you are looking to take something unique home with you.
