1) Museo National de Arte Contemporâneo do Chiado
This secluded museum in Chiado has a very representative collection of modern and contemporary Portuguese art on display, from the late 1800s to today, with significant artworks by artists like Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso, Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro, Almada Negreiros, Silva Porto, Mario Cesariny and Paula Rego.
2) Centro de Arte Moderna
Part of the marvelous Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, this Centre for Modern Art exhibits a permanent collection of Portuguese and International art, including works by Lourdes Castro, Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso, Paula Rego and David Hockney. The gardens around the museum are an oasis of peace in the city.
3) Museu Coleção Berardo
Throughout the years, controversial businessman Joe Berardo built up an impressive collection of modern and contemporary art and stored it at the Centro Cultural de Belém. The Museu Berardo is part of the CCB, it is housed there, inside the CCB. The Berardo Museum displays works by Joana Vasconcelos, Miró, Warhol, Picasso, Schnabel and Basquiat, and has regular and noteworthy temporary exhibits.
4) Museu Vieira da Silva-Arpad Szenes
A former royal silk factory in the charming garden of Amoreiras now houses an intimate museum dedicated to Portugal’s greatest 20th-century artist, Vieira da Silva, and to her husband Arpad Szenes. The museum hosts interesting temporary exhibitions and cultural initiatives.
5) Atelier Museu Júlio Pomar
This small and very unknown museum is solely dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the work of Júlio Pomar, one of the most important Portuguese artists of the 20th century. It is housed in a former warehouse redesigned by architect Siza Vieira and holds an impressive number of Pomar’s works.
