Authentic Maltese eateries in Malta
1) Diar Il-Bniet
The name of this restaurant derives from the title of a medieval fief, located in the area. The fertile land is still used for growing produce, and this is one of the best assets of this restaurant, as they serve fresh vegetables and other local products, ‘from their fields to your fork’. The decoration of the restaurant is that of a typical old Maltese eatery, combined with the delicious smells wafting into the dining room from the kitchen and the sweets on offer. They also organise culinary workshops. Booking is recommended.
2) Il-Barri
Just off the main square of this village, this is also one of the first restaurants to open in this locality. They have been in business for 75 years, and it is still a family-run restaurant. As it caters to a more Maltese clientele, the portions are large, and good. One of its mainstays is the rabbit stew. Another attraction is the underground World War II shelter, which lies beneath the restaurant.

3) Ta' Rikardu
The place to have lunch or dinner, in the Citadel. A restaurant that has retained part of the original decor, serving tasty local favourites, whether vegetable soup or rabbit stew. A popular place, also for its appetisers, and in particular the local cheese and wine from the owner’s vineyard and farm.
4) Il-Bitha Ta' Doni
Located on one of the busy streets of Rabat, between traditional buildings and a small church, the restaurant offers a good ambience, and a relaxed atmosphere as well as good authentic Maltese and Mediterranean food.
5) Ta’ Marija
Ta’ Marija offers a unique experience, with abundant authentic Maltese fare, gastro-style cuisine and a folklore show and music for your enjoyment. The restaurant’s success is due in part to the fact that it’s still family-owned, making it a popular choice with both locals and visitors.
