Petersen Svítan was formerly a third-storey apartment; the space has now been renovated into one of the capital’s tallest and most sought-out taphouses. Views over the bustling streets below make drinking here as much of a cosmopolitan affair as possible in Iceland. Gamla Bíó venue (a former cinema, and now used as an opera house and theatre) is located just downstairs, so Petersen Svítan is a convenient spot to stop for a drink after taking in a concert or theatre show.

On Center Hotel Arnarhvoll’s 8th floor sits SKY Restaurant & Bar, a beloved establishment thanks to its elegant veranda that provides guests with marvellous views over Old Harbour, Harpa Concert Hall and Faxaflói Bay. There is an excellent selection of wines, beers and cognacs on offer, best enjoyed with the listed bar snacks: cheddar cubes, mixed nuts and serano ham.

Loft HI Hostel’s inside sports an abundance of bookshelves, thus is a good spot for avid readers, stressed-out students or just about anyone looking for a beverage in relative quiet. Loft Hostel’s biggest draw, however, is its glorious rooftop from where guests have a great bird’s-eye view over Laugavegur and the city skyline. Throughout the year, Loft Hostel is known for hosting several community nights, from watercolour classes, a clothes swap & shop, and even intimate music and stand-up comedy performances.

Attention Dudes & Dudettes! Lebowski Bar is one of the coolest novelty bars in Reykjavík. The rooftop is only open during the summer, but the rug-draped walls and movie posters of its interior manage to really tie the room together. In line with the cult comedy classic, patrons can choose from a variety of White Russian cocktails, as well as take part in the pub quizzes and parties celebrated throughout the year. And, if on the off chance, Lebowski Bar doesn’t meet your expectations, remember that’s just, like, your opinion, man.
