Memorable monuments in Iceland
1) Skeiðará Bridge Monument
At first glance, one might believe these twisted metal girders to be all that’s left of some long-abandoned infrastructure. The display board will tell you, however, it’s a recognised national monument, one dedicated to the destructive powers of nature. The remnants of Skeiðará Bridge were once part of the Ring Road, but after the 1996 eruption of a volcano beneath Vatnajökull glacier, meltwater cascaded across the landscape, wiping out everything in its path. At the monument, one can also see the glacier tongues Skeiðarárjökull and Svínafellsjökull in the close distance. |
