Formidable fortifications in Malta

1) Cottonera Gate

In 1670, construction started on a new line of fortifications, to be called the Cottonera Lines, as they were commissioned by Grand Master Nicolás Cotoner. The whole line of defence had several ornamental baroque gates, the main one being Żabbar Gate, or Our Lady of Graces Gate. The gate is both impressive in size and decoration. Recently restored, it is now used by an NGO called Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna, which works to preserve local military heritage. The Grand Master’s bust sits at the top of the gate.
