The 5 most charming espresso bars in Rotterdam

1) Kopi Soesoe

This cosy coffee bar annex café in bustling Deliplein in Katendrecht feels like your own living room. Have a strong espresso, or a kopi soesoe: coffee with cardamom and sweet condensed milk. Besides serving excellent coffee, Kopi Soesoe also serves Indonesian dinner on Sundays, and hosts regular events on Friday and Saturday nights.

2) Espresso Dates

This ‘neighbourhood living room’ has a highly diverse clientele and pays special attention to local produce. The cakes are baked by people who live in the neighbourhood, work by local artists hangs on the wall. In addition to regular espressos and cappuccinos, there are some special coffees on the menu, such as a traditional Moroccan herbal coffee.

3) Posse

Everything is for sale in this quirky espresso bar at the Fenix Food Factory, established by the collector and restaurateur Paul Posse, from the furniture you sit on to the works by local artists you see on the wall. Posse probably serves the strongest espressos in town, and also has a food and drinks menu. Open from Friday to Monday.

4) Lokaal

A large part of Lokaal’s breakfast, sandwiches on sourdough bread and sweets are either homemade or bought from local suppliers. The menu features different coffee drinks (flat whites, espressos), different methods of preparation (‘AeroPress’ filter coffee) and different coffee beans. Lokaal opens at 9 am on weekdays and slightly later in the weekends.

5) Urban Espressobar

When Jo McCambridge moved from Australia to Rotterdam in the 90s, flat whites (that Australian specialty) or espresso bars didn’t exist here yet. She decided to establish The Urban Espressobar, without any experience in the catering industry. That turned out not to be a problem: her coffee was voted the best in the country in 2014 by a national newspaper.
