The 5 best places for sunday brunch Budapest

Araz

VII. Dohány utca 42–44.
Erzsébetváros
+36 1 815 1100

Araz is ‘Zara’ spelled backwards, referring to the hotel where this restaurant is located. The building used to be an art nouveau bathhouse; today only the beautiful reception area reminds of that time. The brunch here is probably the best deal in town, considering the variety of food and drinks and the fact that guests of the restaurant can also use the spa facilities free of charge.

Kiosk Budapest

V. Március 15. tér 4.
Belváros
+36 70 311 1969

You could call Kiosk a ruin bar 2.0: it’s not really in a ruin, but the interior was inspired by the aesthetics of those typical bars for youngsters. The place is big, offers some wonderful views, and is immaculately run. Also, if you eat here, you’re contributing to the maintenance of the Piarist monastery where the restaurant is housed – upstairs there are the chapel and the rooms of the monks.

Villa Bagatelle

XII. Németvölgyi út 17.
Hegyvidék
+36 30 359 6295 (bistro)
+36 1 213 4191 (bakery)
villa-bagatelle.com

This Buda villa from 1929 was revived in 2010, when a German-Hungarian couple opened a bakery and a cafe here. They set high standards from the beginning and they are still running the business themselves, so you can be assured that those standards are always met. The restaurant and its lovely terrace are a true favourite among the middle-class locals.

BUBŌ

XIII. Jászai Mari tér 3.

Újlipótváros

Breakfast here is served all day, on the nice (though noisy) terrace, or in the long and narrow inside space. The limited menu features tasty sandwiches and the ambiance is welcoming and familyfriendly – on Sundays you’ll spot happy couples here, who’ve left their Macs at home. The kitchen staff is very quick if the place is not too packed. For brunch, be sure to make a reservation.

SARKI FŰSZERES

XIII. Pozsonyi út 53–55.

Újlipótváros

+36 1 787 7868

The name translates as ‘The Corner Grocery Store’ but the food here is anything but everyday. From the sandwiches over the meats and cheeses to the wines: everything is of the highest quality. The shop itself is packed with delicacies; seating is on the covered terrace outside, semi-insulated from the street.
