Bruges to Damme

Sint-Gillis Quarter

This beautiful route follows the wide Damse Vaart canal built by Napoleon in the early 19th century. The 30-minute ride to Damme takes you along a quiet rural road shaded by tall Canadian poplars. From Damme, you can continue along the canal to the Dutch border town of Sluis. Follow the fietsnet cycle network numbers 23, 60, 10 and 6 to reach Damme.

Bruges to Ghent Canal

South Bruges

It’s possible to follow the canal towpath all the way from Bruges to Ghent, a distance of 45 km. But you can also do a shorter ride from Bruges to Beernem, just 14 km away. You begin at the Katelijnepoort, where the cycle route goes under the ring road to reach the canal. Now follow the fietsnet numbered signs 5, 69, 71, 87, 88 to arrive in Beernem.

Bruges to Blankenberge


You can cycle to Blankenberge in about 70 minutes if the wind is not against you. Most of the time, you are crossing flat Flemish farmland, but the final stretch takes you through the wild nature reserve of Uitkerkse Polder. Start at cycle point 27 on the ramparts, followed by 31, 69, 78, 88, 40, 96, 30 26, 76. Pause in the pretty village of Lissewege for a coffee.

The Groene Gordel (Green Ring) route takes you right out into the countryside around Bruges. The signposted 53-km route has been carefully put together to take in forests, castles, quiet canals and attractive villages. The Groene Gordel website includes a useful map of the route.

Tillegem Woods

’t Zand Quarter

Leave town by the Smedenpoort to explore the woods just west of Bruges. After passing through the Sint-Michiels suburbs, you can follow a meandering route past wayside chapels, farms with honey for sale and impressive country houses. Follow numbered signs 46, 57, 70, 59, 99, 97 and 13 to reach the romantic Loppem castle.
