It’s the hottest summer on record, but you can still find cool spots in Antwerp to sit outside with a drink. Here are five new places to try.
5 new terraces for lazy summer days in Antwerp
1) Grand Café Capital
Hidden in the trees, Grand Café Capital reopened in 2019 after a fire destroyed the original building. Designed by Bulk Architecten, it brings a hint of Scandinavia to the city park with its wood frame, big windows and large terrace. It’s a friendly, relaxed spot to cool down while kids play in the nearby playground.
2) Bar Bakeliet
Designer Julie Vrijens and vintage fan Tim Mouling opened this relaxed bar on a quiet square in the heart of Borgerhout. It has only been around for a few years, but it looks as if it has been here forever. The interior is furnished with a classic fifties mix of Formica tables, shiny beer advertising signs and an old jukebox. And the pavement terrace facing the church is a casual spot to sit outside with friends on a summer evening.
3) Tram 3
Cafe boss Lizzie recently opened her quirky new bar on the upper floors of a historic house in the city centre. She has decorated the 18th-century interiors with sofas, plants and film posters to create an arty mood. There’s also a romantic conservatory with a little fountain and a cool roof terrace for summer evenings.
4) Brouwerijcafé Abc Taproom
The Seef brewery moved into the Noorderpershuis, a former port building in the Eilandje quarter, a couple of years ago. You can pick up a Seef beer from the tap and sit outside in the vast cobbled courtyard. It’s a relaxed hidden spot with an adventure playground, food counter and occasional DJ concerts.
You might need to hop on a bike to reach the magical summer spot called Zomerbar. Held open until the end of August, it’s an inspiring free pop-up site near the river with a circus, alternative theatre, bars, playgrounds and a summer library. People come here with kids, or friends, or just to sit under the trees with a book. Parking for bikes and cars available.
